American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course

This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. It includes water rescue techniques, surveillance and patron prevention, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and teamwork and communication skills required for professional lifeguards. Successful completion results in an American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.

What You Need to Know Before Registering for a Course

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility / Skills Test

Participants must be 15 years of age or older on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

A mandatory pre-course skills session is required to determine that the participant can safely participate in the course. The pre-course skills session will be the first activity after check-in.

Participants must successfully complete both prerequisite evaluations to participate in the course. If a participant is non-successful, they will not be allowed to participate in the course and a partial refund will be issued.

  • Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim–tread–swim sequence without stopping to rest:
    • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
    • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
    • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  • Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
    • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

What to Bring

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Online course completion certificate
  • Lifeguarding Manual
  • Swimsuit and towel
  • UV protection (sunscreen, rash guard, hat, sunglasses)
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Packed lunch (no off-site lunch break)

Lifeguarding Course Requirements

  • Attend and participate in all sessions
  • Demonstrate competency in required skills
  • Successfully complete final rescue scenarios
  • Pass written exams with minimum score of 80%
