Santa Ana Lifeguarding Course

Entry-level lifeguard participants will learn the necessary skills and obtain the critical knowledge to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel take over.

Course Requirements

Before you begin your 1st skills session, participants are required to successfully pass a prerequisite physical skills test. The test will be performed first thing on day 1 to assure that you can complete all the skills required to successfully complete the course.

 

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.
  • If you will be participating in a Lifeguarding review course, a valid American Red Cross lifeguarding course certificate is required
  • 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke 
  • 2-minute tread using legs only 
  • Retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20 yards with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds
  • Complete all Chapter Reviews found in the Lifeguarding Participant Manual
  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1—CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer and Section 2—Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80%.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What happens if I fail the course?

    If you fail to complete the online course or the pre-course skills test you will receive a partial refund of $100. 

    If you fail to complete the written exam or final practical exam you will be marked as unsuccessful and will not receive a refund.

  • How long does the online course take?

    The online course takes 6-8 hours to complete and is not accessible on a mobile device.

  • What is your policy on refunds or rescheduling?

    Blueray will provide a full refund if the course is dropped 14-days prior to your scheduled course. A 75% refund will be provided with a 10 day notice. A 50% refund will be given with a 7 day notice.

    If you need to transfer to a future date, we will need a 1-week notice and a $40.00 transfer fee will be applied. (note- lifeguarding courses are in high-demand, the next available course might not be available until the following month. Please plan accordingly)

  • I’ve completed my course. How do I get my certificate?

    After you have successfully completed your lifeguarding certification course, you can retrieve your certificate by visiting https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate . Your certificate will also be emailed by the american Red Cross to the email provided. Course results are submitted by your instructor within 2-days and will take the Red Cross an additional 2 days to process.
