Covina Lifeguarding Course

Entry-level lifeguard participants will learn the necessary skills and obtain the critical knowledge to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel take over.

Age Requirements

Must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

 

Mandatory Online Course Prerequisite

To successfully pass the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification course there is a mandatory online course that must be completed before day 1 of your scheduled lifeguarding course. The online course takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete. Information and instructions regarding the online course will be provided after registration.

 

Pre Course Physical Skills Test

Participants are required to successfully demonspletetrate the skills required to safely and successfully participate in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The test will be conducted immediately following check-in on day 1 of your scheduled lifeguarding course. The test consists of the following:

Complete a swim-tread-swim Sequence:
The following tasks must be completed one after the other in the specific order without any interruptions in between.

  1. Jump into the water, submerge then resurface
  2. Swim 150 yards (using the front crawl or breastroke or a combination of both)
  3. Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs
  4. swim 50 yards using the front crawl or combination of both

Complete a 1 minute and 40 second timed Event: 

  1. Your starting point will be in the water
  2. Swim 20 yards
  3. Perform a surface dive (either feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 12 feet.
  4. Retrieve a 10-pound object from this depth.
  5. Return to the surface while holding the object.
  6. Swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point.
  7. Hold the object at the surface with both hands.
  8. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguard Course Requirements

To successfully pass the American Redcross Lifeguarding course the following are required:

  1. Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  2. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  3. Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  4. Pass both the Section 1—CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer and Section 2—Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80%.

  1. Lifeguard participant Manual (download link will be provided after registration)
  2. Proof of age (government issued ID) 
  3. Online course completion certificate 
  4. Pen or pencil 
  5. Bathing suit & towel
  6. UV protection (e.g. sun block, rashguard, sunglasses, hats) 
  7. Comfortable clothes
  8. Packed Lunch (there will not be an opportunity to leave for lunch)
