Irvine Lifeguarding Course

There is an online component that must be completed before participating in the in-person sessions. Plan accordingly, as Blueray has a no-refund policy due to the limited availability of lifeguarding courses.

Age Requirements

Must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

Mandatory Online Course Requirement

Completion of the online portion of the course is required before attending any in-person sessions.

Please review the following details carefully:
  • You will receive the course access link via email directly from the American Red Cross.
  • The course link will be sent to the email address used at registration, or the email listed for the enrolled student. Be sure to check your spam or junk folders, as the message may be filtered.
  • Please allow 1 to 2 business days for the course access email to arrive after registering.
  • The online portion of the course takes at least 6 hours to complete
  • If you do not receive the email within that timeframe, you must contact the American Red Cross for troubleshooting at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Pre Course Physical Skills Test

Participants are required to successfully demonstrate the skills required to safely and successfully participate in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The test will be conducted immediately following check-in on day 1 of your scheduled lifeguarding course.

  • 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
  • 2-minute tread water without the use of your hands
  • Retrieve a 10-lb object from at least 7 ft in depth, surface and swim 20 yards with the weight, and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds

Lifeguard Course Requirements

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios
  • Pass both the Section 1—CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer and Section 2—Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80%

Required to Participate

  • Proof of age (government issued ID)
  • Online course completion certificate
  • Pen or pencil
  • Bathing suit & towel
  • UV protection (e.g. sun block, rashguard, sunglasses, hats)
  • Comfortable clothes
  • Packed lunch (there will not be an opportunity to leave for lunch)
